Plexiglas is a good material to consider but may be a bit rigid; also look into thinner more flexible plastics like cellophane sheets are more affordable and can purchased a art supplies stores like Dick Blick

I would suggest foam because its easier to carve out the shapes you may need for this and would require cheaper, simpler tools

does anyone know how to make motorized elevators for models?

  16. ThisGuyBC says:

Thank you for a quick reply. This is my first model and because of the size of my building design the scale to use has been difficult to determine in the end I have 2 scales 1/4″ = 40′ and for more detail 1/4″ = 20′. the larger scale makes my model 50″ tall. I am designing the new tallest building in the world to bring the title back to North America. Maybe when I finish Chicago will build it. It has been awhile since Chicago has had the title.

  17. ChicagoArchToday says:

plexiglas is preferable and you can get it in varying thicknesses, but another option could be the clear plastic that’s used to window some envelopes and commercial products

  18. ThisGuyBC says:

I built my building out of foam board for the walls and structure but now I am wondering what material to use to make the glass. My building is a skyscraper and most of the exterior will be glass. However real glass or plexiglas are to hard to cut to size with exact o knife.

  19. nakedman1762 says:

I used to use matchsticks to build model houses, then I went over to make them from plaster and later on a mixture of cement with plaster. For the walls I used to make molds with layed in openings for windows and doors, for this I used a rubber mat, to pop them out easier, after they were dry. I also have made some houses with “Billing Boat” wooden strips, etc. and Birch triplex of 1, 2 and 3 mm thickness. Now I would like to use Foamboard, which is mostly used by Architects, it’s easy to cut.
