I have been out panning for gold, and every where i pan I get a lot of black sand. about 3 table spoons per half cup of material?     @flagold : (Continued) As for a cutting device – I use a Facetron, and Mrs. Mattson uses my old Lee. The Lee can be had for $300-500 (they were mainly old commercial machines used in gangs so each person made a different cut at the end of the line a finished stone). All the machines are good (Facetron, Graves, Ultra-Tech, whatever) – it’s not so much the machine, it is the discipline to match all the cuts to each other (by eye). The first cut is the important one, the rest are matched meets.?

    @doscoronitas : when we go to Montana for gems, we have been using “Rockhounding Montana” as a guide to get us reasonably close (if not right on) igneous or mineralized ground and then take it from there by eye and? testing. The guide notes three sites in Billings, and 4 others reasonably close for everything from fossils to gems you might want to check that out at the library or click the treasure link and click on that book and see if you can get inside it – they let you read some pages free.
